🤖 AI in Accounting: Is It Really Coming for Your Accountant?

There has been a lot of talk recently about AI in accounting.

Will AI replace accountants?
Will it replace bookkeepers?
Will businesses eventually be able to do everything themselves?

Personally, I don’t think we’re quite there yet.

And I certainly don’t believe AI can replace the years of training, experience and judgement that a good accountant or bookkeeper brings to a business.

But can AI change the way they work?

Absolutely.

And that’s where I think things get interesting.

AI can take away some of the repetitive, time-consuming and, let’s be honest, sometimes rather dull jobs involved in managing accounts.

That isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

If technology can save an accountant or bookkeeper hours of repetitive processing, that gives them more time to do something far more valuable:

look at the numbers, spot what’s happening and help the business owner understand what it actually means.

And surely that’s where the real value of finance lies?

🤔 But here’s the bit we shouldn’t forget…

Accounting software has already been using a form of intelligent automation for years.

If you use Xero or Sage, you’ll probably have seen it when reconciling your bank account.

The software looks at a transaction and says, in effect:

“I think this is what you want to do with this.”

It might suggest a nominal code, match an invoice or identify a receipt.

Very useful.

But here’s the important part:

The software is making a suggestion. You’re still making the decision.

You need to be able to look at that suggestion and decide:

Is it right?

If it isn’t, you need to know how to correct it.

Because if you blindly accept everything the software suggests, you can very quickly end up with accounts that look tidy but aren’t necessarily correct.

And that’s where understanding your accounts becomes so important.

💡 AI doesn’t remove the need to understand your numbers

In fact, I think it could make that more important, not less.

If you’re a business owner using Xero, Sage or another accounting system, you don’t necessarily need to become an accountant.

But you should have enough understanding to ask:

  • Does this transaction look right?
  • Why has this been allocated here?
  • Does my Profit & Loss make sense?
  • Why is my bank balance different from my profit?
  • What are my numbers actually telling me?
  • Can I trust the information I’m looking at?

Because technology can process information incredibly quickly.

It doesn’t mean the information is automatically right.

🧠 So will AI replace accountants and bookkeepers?

I suspect we’ll see AI replace some tasks, rather than replace the people doing the work.

And perhaps that’s a good thing.

Less time spent processing transactions.

More time spent understanding them.

Less time producing numbers.

More time using those numbers to make better business decisions.

That’s the bit I’m excited about.

And this is where good training matters too.

Whether you’re using Sage, Xero or another accounting system, knowing where to click is only part of the story.

You need to understand what you’re doing, why you’re doing it and what the numbers are telling you.

That’s why my approach to training isn’t simply:

It’s about helping people understand their accounts and feel confident using their accounting software.

Learn the software. Understand the numbers. Build confidence.

💬 What do you think?

Will AI eventually replace accountants and bookkeepers — or will it simply allow them to spend more time doing the things humans are best at?

I’d genuinely love to hear what you think.

And if you use Xero or Sage, have you noticed how much of the decision-making the software is already starting to do for you?
